Er schämte sich so sehr, als sie sich an ihn lehnte. Er war völlig verschwitzt und konnte vor Zittern nicht mal mehr ruhig liegen. Als sie dann begann, die Operation nach zuerzählen, stiegen im die Tränen in die Augen. Zum einen vor Rührung, zum anderen weil er wusste, dass seine Zeit als sarkastischer Arzt im OP vorbei war.

Auch wenn sie es nicht zugegeben hätte, war Elena froh, als er endlich schlief. Sie selbst schlief fast augenblicklich ein; sehr viel länger hätte sie wohl nicht durchgehalten.

Kaminski wachte vor Elena auf. Er öffnete seine Augen erst gar nicht, sondern versuchte der Realität noch einige Augenblicke zu entfliehen. In seinen Gedanken war er an seinem Hochzeitstag mit Christiane. Der Moment, als er seine zukünftige Ehefrau, das erste Mal in dem Brautkleid sah, die Geburten der Kinder, aussichtslose Operationen zu denen man ihn bestellt hatte und die Menschenleben die er dabei gerettet hatte.

Da er nur ruhig da lag, gab es für Elena keinen Grund, aufzuwachen. Sie schlief fest und atmete gleichmäßig und tief, wobei ihr Schlaf vollkommen traumlos war.

Irgendwann schaffte er es schließlich nicht mehr, die Wirklichkeit auszublenden. All das war Vergangenheit. Die Gegenwart war, wie sie war: Er fiel Elena mit seinem erbärmlichen Zustand zur Last.
